Scripture often emphasizes unity and harmony among believer. As Christians, that is what we cling to the most, as we should. But it's worth studying the Word to see that there are instances where division is addressed in a positive light.
1.) Purity of Doctrine. Division can lead to clearer understanding of truth. It can cause believers to dig deeper into the Word and into their prayer life. Paul warns us in Romans 16:17-18 about those who cause divisions due to smooth talk and self-serving appetites. Maintaining sound doctrine is important and may require separating from those who distort it.
2.) Strengthening our Faith. Division can sometimes serve to strengthening the faith of those who remain united in truth. In 1 Corinthians 11:19, Paul mentions that factions may arise to prove who is genuine among the believers. Paul is not advocating for division, but he is telling us it's inevitable, and he is urging us to be on the right side of it.
3.) Calling to Accountability. Division can lead to accountability in the community. In Matthew 18:15-17, Jesus talks about addressing sin among believers, which may result in separation if reconciliation fails, emphasizing the importance of accountability and holiness.
4.) Preparation for the Future. In some cases, division can be seen as a preparation for future growth or new directions. Acts 15: 39-41 describes the separation of Paul and Barnabas after a "sharp disagreement," leading to the establishment of new missionary efforts. Paul and Barnabas were able to cover more kingdom ground by going in separate directions.
Generally, believers look at "division" as such a negative thing; however, these examples illustrate division can sometimes serve a purpose in maintaining doctrinal purity, accountability, and overall health of the faith community. It can drive us to seek Jesus and His will for our lives when we would have otherwise snuggled up to what was comfortable.
How often we forget God works ALL things out...even division....for our good, and His glory. Not just my good. Not just your good. But ALL of His children are covered by His goodness, mercy, and grace.
God loves us all and sometimes He moves us, but it's always from glory to glory when we are obedient.
Let's love one another with the love of Jesus and allow God to do the work He wants to do in each of us. We belong to Him!
